Why I’m Switching from Keto While on Zepbound: Prioritizing Protein, Low Fat, and Exercise

Six months into my Zepbound journey, I’ve lost 40+ pounds, my joint pain is gone, and my inflammation has disappeared. But as my appetite has decreased, I’ve realized that my old keto approach just isn’t working for me anymore—at least, not in the way I used to follow it.

I’m making a major shift in my diet, focusing on high protein, lower fat, and fueling my body strategically to support my weight loss, muscle retention, and overall health. And yes, I’ll be sharing all of this on my new YouTube channel, so stay tuned!

Why I’m Moving Away from Keto (For Now)

Keto was a great tool for me in the past, but Zepbound changes how my body responds to food. Because my appetite is significantly reduced, I have to make sure every bite counts. And here’s the problem:

  • Too much fat makes me nauseous. Zepbound already slows digestion, and adding in high-fat meals makes it worse. I’ve had some rough moments of nausea after eating keto-friendly foods that I used to love.

  • I need more protein. With my reduced appetite, I can’t rely on large meals to get my daily protein. If I don’t focus on lean protein sources, I risk losing muscle mass, which is the last thing I want.

  • I need a balanced, sustainable approach. Keto was great when I had a big appetite and needed to manage cravings. But now, I don’t need fat for satiety—I need nutrients for fuel.

My New Focus: High Protein, Low Fat, and Strength Training

So what does my new approach look like?

✔️ Prioritizing Protein – Every meal and snack starts with protein. I lean heavily on protein shakes since they’re easy to digest and keep me on track even when I don’t feel hungry. Other staples include egg whites, lean chicken, Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, shrimp, and fish.

✔️ Keeping Fat Lower – I still include healthy fats, but I don’t actively add butter, heavy cream, or extra oils like I used to. Instead, I get natural fats from whole foods like avocados, nuts (in moderation), and salmon.

✔️ Walking & Resistance Training – Exercise is non-negotiable. I walk daily for overall health and incorporate weight training to maintain muscle. Since Zepbound can lead to muscle loss, resistance training is crucial to keeping my body strong as I lose weight.

Final Thoughts

Switching from keto to high protein, low fat wasn’t something I expected, but it’s what my body needs right now. If you’re on Zepbound or a similar medication, you might need to tweak your approach too. Weight loss isn’t just about cutting calories—it’s about fueling your body wisely.
